You have just purchased cases of wine and you’re planning to store them for a couple of months to make them even more delicious. But what’s the best way to store them? Keeping the bottles upright may seem the most convenient, but is that really the best way?

Why You Shouldn’t Store Your Wine Standing Up

When your wine is in a standing position it is not touching the cork. As a result, the cork will start to dry out, which may let in air that causes oxidation, resulting in quicker aging and poor tasting wine.

Although you may see wine stored upright at the grocery store or your local beverage retailer, those kinds of shops have quick turnaround, so the wines are not left on the shelf long enough for storage to have a significant impact. They are expecting timely sale of the wine bottles.  

Likewise, if you plan on drinking your wine shortly after acquiring it, for instance a month or week, you have nothing to worry about. It is safe to store your wine in an upright position in the short term, but not in the long run. 

Now that you know that storing wine you plan to let age over time in standing position is not ideal, here are some additional tips that you can take into consideration when storing your wine. 

Tips on Storing Your Wine 

  • Store on its side

Putting a bottle of wine on its side will keep the cork that seals the bottle moist, owing to its contact with the wine in the bottle. When the cork is moist at all times it will prevent it from drying out or shrinking which could result in accelerated aging and oxidation.

  • Don’t store your wine in a place that has direct sunlight or bright indoor lighting

When storing bottles of wines, lighting, heat, and exposure to the sun are very important considerations. The most effective lighting source that you can use is LED as LEDs produce significantly less heat than alternatives. Also, keep the bottles away from sources of natural light and windows to avoid potential impacts of UV light.

  • Keep wine at a consistent temperature

Changing temperature may negatively affect the chemical and aging process that takes place in the wine. This is the main reason why wine refrigerators and cellars temperatures are fastidiously controlled. Thus, a constant and mild temperature is best.
